Human Freedom – Quotes – Contrarian Perspective

m>”Hero-worship is strongest where there is least regard for human freedom.” – Herbert Spencer

WTF? Totalitarian countries encourage cult of the personality around leaders like Hitler, Stalin, North Korea’s Kims, blah. Despite there being no freedom in those countries, there’s plenty of devotees to the leader, hero-worshipping him as if he’s superhuman. The hero-worship is a sign of authoritarianism, i.e. least regard for human freedom.

“[Hero-worship = Impersonal hero-worship / Hero-worship of strangers / Hero-worship idolatry] … is strongest where there is least [regard = pretence/provisions/guarantees] for human freedom.”

WHY? Hero-worship when it’s a personal, real relationship is a more complex dynamic. It’s a dynamic that’s good for tackling with confidence the difficult learning/training curve. Hero-worship of a genuinely benign teacher is one of the best ways to acquire their expertise.
